With a small water tank and a semi-circular mopping pad, the robot vacuum excels in washing and sweeping hard floors. The dustbin, tucked under a top flap, can be manually emptied, but thanks to the docking station's automatic cleaning cycle, you'll likely never have to. On the top of the robot vacuum, you'll find three buttons for power, spot cleaning, and returning to the charging station. The 3D obstacle avoidance system can detect and avoid up to 42 objects, and through frequent updates, the S8 Pro Ultra continually improves its capabilities. The IR camera works with the Lidar sensor to identify items like socks, cables, and potential entanglements in the vacuum's brush or wheels – it can even detect pet waste. The latter replaces the standard camera on the S7 with a live view display in the app with a two-way communication option. With a Lidar scanner, an array of sensors, and a front-facing IR camera. The S8 Pro Ultra approaches obstacles with gentleness, steering away from the harsh collisions experienced in other robot vacuums I’ve tested. The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra dock, has a self-emptying docking station. The dual rubber brushes prevent pet hair from tangling, minimising maintenance. I'd love to hear from someone more versed in how this actually functions.The S8 Pro Ultra adopts a classic circular design with two large spring-loaded wheels, dual rotating brushes, and a rubber brush bar, effectively consuming dust and dirt, which is then drawn in by the powerful motor. If the base had been in a different room, or if line of sight to the base were blocked, this may not have sorted itself out so neatly. I suspect while the robot was turning in circles looking for the dock in the old location, a sensor picked up a signal (likely optical?) from the base station in the new location, and thus was able to drive itself there. *A note on #6 above - I'm not sure how this would have worked out if I had changed the room that the base was in. After the cleaning, the vacuum went directly to the new dock location, and everything appears updated in the map in the app. I started a cleaning (a zone cleaning in this case, but I don't think that's relevant) and once it left the dock from the new location, the map in the app updated the dock location to the new location.An interesting quirk: on the map on the app, it showed the vacuum driving to the new location, but once it was docked, it showed the vacuum located at the old location.After a few minutes of looking in the wrong place, it suddenly turned around and drove straight to the new dock location, and docked itself.*.(It was kinda cute actually - us humans can anthropomorphize anything.) It drove back and forth and around in circles a bit, trying to find the dock.It began its little "wiggle dance" trying to dock itself, but soon figured out there was no dock there.
